Synergy

Within this blog post I will be writing about the use of Synergy in Katy Bs Anywhere in the World music video for the London 2012 Olympics.

Synergy is when the interaction of two or more forces working together that creates greater effect than the sum of their individual efforts. Synergy is used for multiple computers, like a laptop or a desktop and this allows you to combine your devices together into one cohesive experience.

Within synergy the more that it is used the more money you are going to make. For example with the Justin Timberlake song I'm loving it McDonalds use that on there adverts at the end of them as it stays in your head once you have hear it. This shows that with the more synergy you use the more money you are able to make when using it for adverts or music videos.

The producer of the song Anywhere Around the world Mark Robinson chose Katy B for this song because he thought she could become the new Lily Allen. Katy B wasn't very big before she recorded this song and Mark Robinson thought that this could the breakthrough that she needs by recording the song for the Coca Cola advert and this will promote her as an artist. By doing this Katy B will have a greater global appeal because millions of people will see her perform the song in the London 2012 Olympics opening ceremony as well as it gaining millions of views on YouTube.

Synergy is used in Katy Bs song Anywhere in the World and this is done by showing red that symbolising Coca Cola and this is to give Coca Cola a global reach around the world and make the logo much more noticeable to people. Another way Synergy is used in this music video is they show a lot of the athletes who are competing in the London 2012 Olympics and also shots of the Olympic stadium. This is to commercial the Olympics around the world and bring in a bigger audience to watch the Olympics and also buy tickets to go and see the Olympics.

Synergy is used in this song is by showing all the major sports brands such as Nike and Adidas. This is to make money out of people who look up to these athletes and with them wearing all the new sports clothing this could persuade people to go out and buy all the new sports wear to celebrate the London 2012 Olympics and also look like the athletes as well. By doing this Nike and Adidas are also expanding there global reach with this Youtube video having a massive amount of views.

Another way of synergy being used in is there is representation of a young person living in London ready to watch the Olympics. Synergy is also used because they are using two of the biggest and most noticed brands in the world that being Coca Cola and Mc Donald's. These two are also two of the most unhealthiest things two eat or drink in the world with Coca Cola having one of the biggest sugar contents in there drinks.

Most of the competitors at the Olympics such as Mo Farah who is sponsored Quorn which is a major meatsubsitute product to replace meat's with healthier meat product. Mc Donald's is the most unhealthiest fast food restaurant there is around the world and they are allowed to sponsor the olympics which is about being healthy and competing and the highest level. This shows that there is a lot of money involved with sponsorships in the olympics and other sports events such as the World Cup. Coca Cola and Mc Donald's usually have there logo on the World Cup or advertisements on at half time for the Super Bowl this is to give there brands a bigger global appeal and create a massive buzz for people to go and buy Mc Donald's or drink Coca Cola.

Crime Analysis

In this blog post I will be analysing an episode of The Killing which is a Crime Series on Netflix and the season it was from was season 3 episode 8. I will be speaking about the following:
  • Character Analysis
  • Narrative Structure
  • Technical Elements
Crime Narratives are different to soap operas, Crime Narratives tend to start of slower and have a slow paced storyline due to the open structure. The episode I watched in The Killing which was episode 8 season 3. The program begins with the use of characters personas and editing techniques.

Character Analysis

There are two main characters these are the Cops called Linden and Holder, the roles that they play are two detectives trying to solve an on going case. Detective Holder is a laid back character who has a few different facial expressions but during the episode her emotional side comes out as the episode progresses and in the scene where one of his best friends Bullet is found dead.

After this some his anger comes out and this is shown when the punches one of his detectives. Linden is similar to Holder but with a bigger sense of emotional behaviour. Linder is a mother and due to this when she enters the hop use where Cally lives and she the begins to speak to her mothers in a more caring manner. Linden is the more sensible and professional and she does things more to the rules and likes to go into greater depths to find out the truth.

Narrative Structure

The Narrative structure for crime series there is a wider range of plots compared to soap opera. This is because within crime series there is a slow but gripping storyline and with each episode in the series there is more leaks of information which leads to a huge finale. The Killing is linear, this is because there is a start, middle and end which is used to show the story evolving.

The main plot point in The Killing is where the detectives go to Cally's Mothers house because they have found some information involving the case and her daughters whereabouts. This then develops the story even more with Linden and Holder going to the suspected killers storage locker which was where they found a freshly lit Cigarette. This then leads to Linden thinking that the killer has been there beforehand and after this Linden is then attacked by the suspected killer. This then leads onto the next plot point with the killer than being caught by the Cops and taken for questioning. The Linden questions his girlfriend about his where he was that day and after questioning Linder then Clicks and thinks it can't be him because he was nowhere near the scene during that day. After this the plot then developed even further with Holder attacking one of the detectives and this was due to him not telling Holder about Bullet ringing and looking for him and this then brings out Holders emotions.

Technical Elements

The technical elements are that suspense is created using non-digetic sound. The music is usually dark and creepy and this adds tension to the audience and makes you want to continue watching the episode to find out what happens next. Low key lighting is also used to create a dark side within the episode and this could show that something big is going to happen next.

The main editing techniques are that there are lots of jump-cuts and these shots add progression of one scene to the next one. There isn't many shot reverse shots in The Killing but when the two detectives are on the screen due to them being sat close to one an other this allows the camera to be close up to show the characters emotions. There is also a fade to black when its the end of a scene as this shows that the story is progressing and its the start of the next scene. When the characters are having conversations with one an other there is usually a shot reverse shot and this shows conversations between the two characters.

When fight scenes are taking place the camera is held closer to the character to create a fight like scene. This also allows the sense of movement in the camera and then the camera can move easily with the characters. Close ups are also used to show a range of different emotions and the location changes very often during the episode and one of them is in a dark house and another one is in a police station and the final one is a security prison where the suspected killer is kept for a death penalty. The clothing the characters wear during The Killing fits the mise en scene of the program with the dark, dull feel and this allows the episode to run smoothly.

Character Analysis Inbetweeners

Within this blog I will be analysing an episode of the Inbetweeners. The episode that I will be looking at is The Fashion Show in Season 3. I will be speaking about the Characters in the episode, the editing techniques used and also the narratives such as the plot points.

Character Analysis

The 3 Characters that I will be analysing are Will, Simon, Jay and Neil who are the 4 main Characters in the Series Inbetweeners. In the Inbetweeners Will is the sensible character and is like the father figure and is always trying to be controlling with whatever Simon, Neil or Jay do he trys to be the sensible one all the time.

Will is also very embarrassing in the episode trying to boycott the Fashion Show which is for a very good cause in raising money for the fashion show for a character called Alister who has Kidney Failure and is getting better and Will trys to boycott the fashion show by trying to get Alister to find a different way to raise money for the hospital he was treated at.

In the Inbetweeners Jay is the liar of the group and has no maturity who trys to make himself out to be really popular by telling loads of lies to everyone in the group. For example in the this episode when Simon is asked to be in the fashion show he walks off with Carly the organiser of the fashion show by making up a lie saying he's just missed a call from Ralph Lauren when Simon, Will realise that the phone didn't even ring.

Neil is the one in the group who has no care in the world and is the loveable one in the group and no matter what he does during the series everyone in the group will always love him and always looks for advice from Will but also Neil believes anything Jay tells him. Simon is the most mature one of the group with his car having passed his test in the earlier series but also can turn into Jay. For example when he is caught by his parents and brother practising for the Fashion Show in the conservatory and uses language similar to what jay would do and storms of kicking the chair and climbing on top of the shed in anger.

Narrative Analysis

The Narritive for Inbetweeners is split into 2 plot points which are firstly when Will is brought into the office by Gilbert who is the headmaster of the sixth form they attend and tells Will that he will be collecting all the money they raise for the fashion show. This is where Will brings up the point about  the modelling show being about exclusive Vanity and that there are other ways to raise money for the fashion show. This also Shows that Will is also the most responsible one of the group haven been chosen by Gilbert to collect the money for him because Gilbert knows Will wouldn't take the money.

This is the first plot point because it shows there ordinary lives changing from there every day life going Sixth form for Simon to be modelling in the fashion show and Will to be collecting the money and this is where the boycott against the fashion show starts. Also during this plot point Will, Simon, Jay and Neil aim to get something out of the Fashion Show with Jay wanting to be a Model for Carly. Simon wanting to do anything for her, Will wanting to boycott the whole fashion show and Neil to try and see all the girls naked.

Plot point two is where Simon is chosen at the end for Carly's sexy finale at the end and Simon without knowing has his testicle out during the whole finale at the end and embarrasses himself. This is the second plot point because everything gets messed up for simon because he leaves his testicle out during the finale which embarrasses Carly because it wasn't meant to be funny for anyone and all the repercussions after this are dealt very quickly and Simon gets into serious trouble with the Gilbert the head teacher of the school and he falls out with Carly. Will gets rejected from Charlotte who he is always trying to impress her by doing anything she asks of him similar with Simon and Carly. Jay doesn't get to model and ends up at the hospital with his ear after it got infected and makes up some more lies that he had slept with the nurse and claimed she looked like Lucy Pinder which Neil believes. Finally Neil didn't get to see any girls but confesses that he has kissed Charlotte in front of Will before and there lives go back to normal and the whole problem has been solved.

Technical Elements

The technical elements for this episode of the Inbetweeners are that the Mise En Scene for this episode are that the characters are middle class people. This is shown because they are mainly dressed in there college uniforms in the episodes which also shows a teenage youth culture with scenes of them going college and going out with each other after college has finished. The way they wear there uniforms show their separate personas with Simon and Will have the smart and geeky look and this matches there characters in the series. Where as Jay and Neil have the scruffy way of wearing it which match there which matches there characters in the series.

The main editing techniques for the Inbetweeners are there are plenty of jump-cuts which keep the scene moving forward with the same storyline. Other shots that are used are shot reverse shots, close ups and medium close ups. The shot reverse shot shows a conversation between two people and mainly close up to their face to show some emotions. An example of this is with the scene with the disabled person Alister and a high angle shot is used to show his emotions when speaking to Will. The sound that is used in the Inbetweeners is diegetic which is all on scene sound which is the characters voices and music.

Soap Opera Analysis

Soap operas is one of Britans most popular genres and have had some of the highest viewing figures since they have started and there main focusses are everyday problems which reflect reality. Soap operas have realism and they accomplish this by sets that relate to its audience through culture realism. One of the biggest soap operas is Coronation Street which is set in weatherfield which is a fictional town in Salford, this town has terraced houses, post office, newsagent, cafe and a pub called The Rovers Return which is the meeting place for the whole community.

Eastenders is the other big soap opera and there approach is similar with a fictional city called Walford in London with a has a newsagents, cafe, terraced houses and a pub called The Queen Victoria Pub Soap operas revolve around families and the social statues of the family which can be determined by which family they come from in the program and what role they are in the family such as mum, dad or son in the family.

Soap operas have many other characteristics and one of these is how they portray women in the program. There are two ways with how the women are portrayed and one of them is the Matriarch which is a powerful women who is the head of the family and is looked unto by others and an example of this is Peggy Mitchell from Eastenders who is a powerful women in this soap opera and everyone looks up to her. and she is also the head of the pub in Eastenders called The Queen Victorian Pub.

The other characteristic for women in soap operas is the bitch, The Bitch is person who controls people to get information they want and they can also be evil and psychotic. An example of a bitch in soap operas would be former Eastenders actor Charlie Brooks who was the best bitch in Walford and was known on Eastenders for plotting and scheming for her own personal gain.

The female characters in soaps are usually the controllers of all information and they gain this information from questioning people. The female characters use the information to there advantage to gain power in the commiunity and they often get what they want from this.

In soap operas people are that are being deceived by the females are usually the male characters in soap operas. Male characters are the ones who try to avoid all drama with the female characters but usually they get sucked in. Although males are the ones who orchestrating whats going on in soap operas. Males in soap operas are usually weak men and they can lack in social skills and are manipulated by women although this isn't the case for every male character in soap operas as some are very strong men and sometimes can be blamed for things they haven't done such as killings or cheating that go on in the programs.

Narratives in soap operas can be both open or closed narratives, closed narratives are the stories that tend to be short and are normally wrapped up and solved by the end of the program. An example of this show would be a sitcom such as The Big Bang Theory which is a show that is a closed narrative with characters that always their way into difficult situations but end up finding a solution to the problems in the Sit-com. Shows with an over arching narrative which will run throughout the series are soap operas like Coronation Street and Eastenders which have an over arching storyline which will run across a period of time and is effective in gaining viewing figures for these soap operas and this shows how popular they are amongst people because they keep you interested and make you want to watch the next episode to see what happens next.

Other narratives in soap operas are Linear and Non-Linear, Linear narratives are programs that consist of a start, middle and a end and this is used in most films and is used a lot in the Transformers films with there being a beginning of the story a middle part with something dramatic happening and the end being the big war at the end of all films. The opposite to Linear narrative is a Non-Linear narrative which is a film where the start may be at the end and doe not move in a chronological order and an example of a Non-Linear film would be Batman Begins which was released in 2005.

There are also five scales of narratives such as a Micro narrative which usually deals with relationships between certain characters. An example of this would be that the writers would plan a disagreement and this then would be classed as a Micro narrative and an example of a film like this would be a romantic film such as Titanic.

A Meta-narrative is a narrative that deals with drugs and race and an example of this could be panorama which is a program that deals with these problems.

A Macro narrative is a program that can embrace the notion of a society being created and this is the most popular narrative within soap operas where there is drama created on a square or a street and both Eastenders and Coronation Street are examples of Macro narratives.

A Trans-narrative is a narrative which is the sum of all the story being seen all at once.

A Hyper narrative is a narrative that refers to a small scale of collective stories.

There is also a technical aspect to soap operas and they use natural light when they are filming scenes outside this is beneficial because it gives the program more of a naturalistic look. The sound for soap operas is diegetic and this consists of the sound being on the screen and fitting with the current time frame.

The editing techniques soap operas consist of are jump cuts and shot reverse shots and these are used to fit the style and help the program rum smoothly. Jump cuts are used to show the movement of the storyline. Shot reverse shots show the conversation between two people and these are used as a close up to show emotion or expressions used.

Within the Mise en scene the location is a stereotypical London street with houses, a pub and corner shops. The clothes they wear are also stereotypical with Peggy Mitchell dressed in smart casual clothes because she owns a pub. You also have the characters who own a corner shop and they are dressed in smart casual clothes like Patrick Truman who owns the corner shop in EastEnders. Finally you have all the that are in the mechanical business and they dress in dark, baggy and dusty clothes that fits the location they work in rather than smart or casual wear.
